Monroe's $60 million water program underway
As the Monroe City Council decides this week whether to move forward on a new water-meter system, the citys Capital Assets Program has already begun a $60 million water-system improvement program.
The water meters are only one component of our water system improvement plans, Mayor Jamie Mayo said.
Engineering design work involves a $4.1 million water filter rehabilitation project, a $1.2 million booster pump station generator project and a $23.7 million comprehensive water treatment plant upgrade project will all be in place by May, according to Public Works Director Tom Janway. Then cleaning and rehabilitating old water lines is on tap.
Some are 70 to 80 years old, Janway said. Many are undersized and will be replaced.
The overall project is being divided into three phases.

Shipping lanes into Boston moved to protect whales Moved four miles north of normal route Two whales have been hit in the last six weeks. Starting Sunday, large vessels will travel roughly 6.5km north of the existing path in new lanes to avoid parts of a whale feeding sanctuary. It is the first change of US shipping lanes to protect an endangered species. The Coast Guard says electronic maps have been recalculated, navigational charts reprinted and mariners warned. Coast Guard cutters are patrolling the area to mark the new lanes with buoys in time for Sunday's shift, which adds 10 to 20 minutes of sailing. Boston, a busy port since the early 17th century, receives at least three cargo ships carrying containers, oil or liquid natural gas each day.
Many County Streams Listed As 'Impaired'
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has released a new statewide list of streams, lakes and reservoirs that do not meet requirements for fishing, recreation and other public uses. As in past years, Greene County has a large number of streams -- a total of 59 -- listed as "impaired" on the list. The great majority of these streams are "listed" because of siltation, and pasture grazing is listed as the cause. Some of the Greene County streams are listed as having unacceptably high levels of the E. coli bacteria, and again the cause is said to be pasture grazing.
