I heard from a good source that Chicago's Zakk Tyler will indeed become the new Dave FM morning host. He was introduced to the Dave FM sales staff earlier this week. Why the Powers That Be have not officially announced it yet, when he'll actually start or whether Holly Firfer will be part of it is unknown to me. I haven't gotten a callback yet from Wheeler. Check out my Nov. 27 blog entry about this news here. Flying clouds the real climate culprit
It is already the largest single source of carbon emissions after energy, contributing up to 10 times as much as aviation. The Stern Report, no less, warned that rainforest destruction alone would, in the next four years, release more carbon into the atmosphere than every flight from the dawn of aviation until 2025. Burning forests produces a particularly nasty double whammy of warming. As they burn, they send vast swathes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. And once they're gone, they can't soak up the carbon from industry, cars and power plants. But despite all this, people get far more exercised over the evils of aviation than they ever do over forest loss. This is partly because aviation looms large on those instant "carbon calculators", designed to give a rough-and-ready guide to an individual's impact.
Oxfam: 3.6 million face starvation in Niger if the world does not ...
Oxfam's program is saving lives but in the face of the level of need, this is just a drop in the ocean. Almost four million people need food aid now. The UN appeals need immediate funding to ensure that all those in need receive help," said Quist. The World Food Program (WFP) increased its appeal on July 12th asking for a further $12 million to help the people in Niger to make it through the next three months. The UN emergency appeal for $18.3 million, launched in May, remains less than a quarter funded. Between them, the appeals are two thirds under-funded, with a total funding shortfall of $26.5m. "The UN needs money now. Every day that the world's richest countries look the other way, more people face starvation. They have to put their hands in their pockets before it's too late," added Quist.
Filling Dontrelle's shoes _ Marlins' Miller will try
The Florida Marlins' never-ending, attendance-deflating cycle of purging payroll and revamping the roster reaps an occasional gem, and Andrew Miller could be one. The 6-foot-6 left-hander looks impressive merely throwing bullpen sessions this week at spring training. He delivers a darting fastball with a fluid motion, which makes him quite a contrast to herky-jerky Dontrelle Willis, the pitcher Miller will try to replace in the rotation. "I've got a great opportunity," the 22-year-old Miller said. "I'm going to try and take it." He was one of six players acquired by Florida in the December trade that sent Willis and slugger Miguel Cabrera to the Detroit Tigers. The Marlins made the deal hoping Miller is ready for a starting role less than two years after he was taken by the Tigers as the sixth overall pick in the 2006 draft.
TONAWANDAS: Suddenly single dad
When a woman in her late 30s becomes pregnant, her doctor typically is more guarded about the unborn baby's health. Later-life pregnancies are considered high risk for a number of reasons.One-month-old Rebecca Ripson came into the world in perfect condition. It's her mom who didn't make it.Patricia A. White, 38, died shortly after giving birth Dec. 29 at Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo. Last-minute complications took her life on what should have been a day of pure joy."She never even got to see the baby," White's fianc, David Ripson Jr., said. Throughout her pregnancy, Patty's health apparently was not in question. She was enrolled in Children's high risk program because the combination of her age and prior history — two miscarriages — recommended an extra-watchful eye be kept on the baby.Patty carried Rebecca to full term without incident and was, in fact, four days overdue when her doctor recommended induced labor.
