They were more than interesting; they were educational, "a fascinating view" of a certain culture and should still be available for others to see, said Leff, a destination planner for Charleston Tours. So where did the shrunken heads go? According to Martha Zierden, curator of historical archaeology at the Charleston Museum, the heads are in storage. They were taken off display in the early 1980s, as public opinion changed on what was appropriate, she said. "Ethics and the way we perceive human remains have changed over the years," she said, citing the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act as an example.

Toothpaste is a bright idea to fix scratched CDs
Dear Billy: Compact discs can scratch easily, but the good news is that many scratches can be wiped away with ordinary white toothpaste. Gels won't work -- just plain, white toothpaste. Squeeze a small amount of toothpaste onto a clean sock or any lint-free cloth and apply to the CD, starting from the inside and working outward like the spokes of a wheel. Remember to wipe it from the inside out, never back and forth. Once the underside is coated, take the clean, dry part of the sock and wipe away the toothpaste, again using spokelike strokes -- from the inner edge to the outer edge. Don't use water. Just continue wiping until the paste is gone. This should work great on minor scratches on DVDs and game discs, too. Dear Heloise: I put two frozen waffles in the toaster.
Home dialysis machine revitalizes patient's life
SAIA FASSISILA, pastor of the United Methodist Church in San Mateo, dreaded his options when his kidneys failed two years ago. Either he stayed hooked up three times a week, four hours a session to a large machine that cleaned his blood, or he'd die. Although he'd taken medication for years to control his high blood pressure, in his case that wasn't enough to stop the condition from damaging his kidneys. "I had no choice," Fassisila said. When doctors sent him from his bed at Stanford Hospital directly to a dialysis clinic to clear his blood of the accumulated metabolic byproducts, excess nutrients and water were close to killing him, since his kidneys could no longer eliminate them. "I was given a second chance in life with dialysis," said Fassisila, 48, who was born and raised in Tonga.
